Cheralynn Johnston is a native Californian. She received her MFA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, Georgia. Her work resides in the Permanent Collections of The Savannah College of Art and Design, along with private collectors. “My paintings are dynamic dimensional pieces that invite the viewer to explore visual deceptions. Within each flat canvas a variety of paint applications form layers waiting to be excavated. These layers of paint create atmospheric depth to literal flatness. Unexpected areas within the paint reveal themselves as paint is added and subtracted repeatedly until there is a finished product. This approach of layer upon layer of dripped, poured, sanded, and scraped surfaces unveils a range of velocities, intuitive color decisions, chaotic and structured lines, and a confusion of space. The amalgamation of these mark-making processes results in deceptively smooth yet multifaceted paintings. “The Flag Series is an exploration in using a symbol, the American flag, within my process. The process of dripping, pouring, sanding, and reapplying paint is what inspires me. Using the flag as a subject started as an experiment with colors and grew into this series of abstract paintings. As one painting led to another I thought about everything the flag stands for. In the end, the paintings are really about the process and don’t hold a hidden meaning about current events.”
