Kezia Hearn: Artist's Statement

ETHEREAL

My recent work involves an abstract approach to exploring and interpreting the ephemeral quality of life. My work is inspired by Eastern thinking and philosophy, specifically the Chinese concept of "Li", organic pattern in nature, and “Qi” energy. My close relationship with the natural world, as well as a lifelong fascination with natural forms, patterns, and processes fuels much of my work.

I am interested in exploring the nature of life and illuminating the connections between myself, geometry, science, and spirituality.

This work touches on my fascination with the unseen world or “Great Mystery”in Native American tradition. It is a space that is filled with infinite potential. It is both clear and unclear, blossoming and fading, accumulating and renewing, here and there at the same time. Through the repetition and layering of simple circular forms, washes, and veils of color, I aim to create an atmosphere of flux. As I work with the colorful fluidity of the paint, I move into a meditative space until the painting feels that it has come to a place of balance.

Interconnectivity is a unifying theme in my work. I enjoy exploring and discovering natural patterns and systems that function in groups and colonies. By exploring these connections to the the microscopic and larger macroscopic level, I invite the viewer to contemplate their place in the greater web of life.
